Improve Sanitation at Dabil Dispensaries
Inaugural Project in Dabil
In 2024, Karimu selected Dabil as the next ward to focus our poverty elimination strategy on. It is a very large and dispersed ward with ~25,000 people across 4,000 households. There are only two dispensaries serving the entire community: Sabilo (shown in the banner photo above) and Mandi (in the photo below).
As Karimu executed its in depth analysis of the region, we were shocked with the lack of incinerators and placenta pits in Dabil’s dispensaries. Incinerators are critical to dispose of contaminated material that otherwise is thrown into regular trash piles and taken away by animals or children playing nearby. The lack of a placenta pit requires the medical staff to demand that mothers take their placenta home after birth so they can dig a deep hole and dispose of it. However, this has led to placenta thrown away in brushes and fields attracting dangerous animals such as hyenas. We felt compelled to solve this sanitary issue immediately and execute these 2 small projects.
Additionally, Karimu is fairly unknown within the ward. As we introduce ourselves across the ward, these small projects can have immediate benefit:
-
The construction of placenta pit, incinerator and fence for Sabilo dispensary and
-
The construction of an incinerator and fence next to the existing placenta pit for Mandi dispensary.
This will immediately improve the sanitation at the dispensaries, begin to build connections with the medical staff, and demonstrate Karimu’s seriousness to add value to the community at large. The completed projects are now in use.

Benefits:
-
Improve sanitation at the dispensaries
-
Begin to build community and trust within the ward
