A New Kitchen for Haysam Primary

The final campus construction project!

Currently, student meals are prepared in a tiny building that fills with smoke when the food is cooked. The walls are brick, the floor is mud, the roof is sloped metal sheet, windows are just open holes, and cooking is done over open stone firepits.  There is no protected storage, so it is difficult to keep firewood dry and to protect food and sanitation supplies from being stolen. The amount of smoke generated in this small cooking area can cause eye and respiratory diseases for the community cooks as well as children walking by when served.

Inside the old kitchen the cook stokes the fire for food preparation.

Karimu will work with the community to build an enclosed kitchen that includes a cooking area, a serving area, and a food storage area that is dry, clean and secure.

Here you can see the new kitchen layout.
Here is the campus layout with the kitchen in blue at the bottom.

This is the final construction project in rebuilding Haysam Primary school together with the final classroom construction that is underway in parallel.   Karimu has completed these projects for Haysam Primary

As with all projects, the Haysam community contributes directly to the project. They will dig the foundation, provide bricks for the construction, and contribute cash totaling Tsh 5,562,700 representing a 6.5% contribution to the project.

1. Clearing the land and digging the foundation = Tsh 400,000

2. Delivering 23,000 bricks = Tsh 2,300,000

3.Cash payment = Tsh 2,862,700

Sustainability is ensured based on our memorandum of understanding with the community and our tracking of maintenance inspections, incident reporting, and resolution. Across all Haysam Primary construction projects maintenance incidents have an average time to fix of 23 days, exceeding our target!   Most incidents are minor e.g. paint peeling off a wall or a loose or broken faucet, but the Haysam staff clearly takes pride in its school and values the investment we have jointly made.
